Changing gears - How - Part2 of how to drive a stick shift

Everyone appears to be on the right track about changing gears and do we need to change anyway, but when we talk about difficuty in changing gears its mainly because when you clutch down, car speed start changing, especially on a gradient and its this change that student are find themselves not prepared for, and it leads them to rush and make mistakes. So start off changing gears on level road till you feel confident and then increase difficulty. is on up hill etc.
Yep, it certainly makes sense

When I was a commercial driver I had to take the Smith defensive driving course. They recommended leaving enough room to pull around the vehicle ahead of you in case they stalled. The "drivers" I hate are the ones who leave one or more car lengths in front of them then keep moving forward one or two feet at a time while waiting for the signal to change. I can only guess that by engaging in this idiocy they indulge themselves in the illusion that they are still moving.

In my state kids with permits are allowed to drive with kids in the back seat. Don't you think it would be safer for everyone if that wasn't allowed. It doesn't make sense to me considering your a new driver you don't need distractions. I think this can become a hazard for everyone in the car and anyone else on the road that could become hurt by an accident. I would think it would be safer if kids are not allowed to drive, period. 18 years should be the legal age, which is so in many countries -

How about getting another mirror, vaccum adhesive, place it on the top-right corner of the front windshield or near the interior mirror, and use IT to see the child in the rear?

Sure beats tilting down the interior mirror and reducing your view at the road behind. Some vans nowadays have another small mirror surface over the original one for this very purpose. Yeah, we got such a van recently. However, this extra mirror is small and shows faces very small, too - so I often end up tilting the

Well, as usual we are more or less in agreement. The thing that I would advise differently is to start accelerating not when you are already fully on the oncoming traffic lane, but much earlier, when you are just starting to advance to the left.

This way the whole maneuver takes less time - and the less time you are on the way of upcoming traffic, the safer it is. :)

We are always used as lab rats LOL. I did not notice such changes here in NOVA though. For all the years I live here, there are two standard setups: either a regular green arrow with no sign - which means no turn without green arrow; or the same arrow with an extra sign that reads something like "yield to oncoming traffic on green". That's how we have it here.

Hey Sgtrock, thanks for your good words. Well, the problem with this site is two-fold.

First, there are just not too many people interested in driving (as opposed to discussing car models). Did not think about it before starting the site - but in a hindsight it is pretty obvious, if you try to recall how many bad drivers are on the road.

Second, google killed the influx of new members, albeit minimal, with its numerous Pandas and Penguins. This site is penalized, and google does not send

Yesterday I was turning left from a turn lane. A box truck on the side street where I was turning was stopped at a stop sign. As I turned A pedestrian "shuffled" (I'm talking slow) into my lane from behind the truck! My speed was 10mph or less so I had no problem stopping. The pedestrian never looked in my direction! Are they ignorant, stupid, or suicidal? 10 mph would still hurt! There was a marked crosswalk in front of the truck!!!

Hey there, long time no read, eh?

So here's a little thing to punder on: Is your passengers' compartment safe? Wait! Before you answer, read this. I bet you would find several hazards inside your own passenger compartment.

The passengers' compartment is part of the driver's environment, which in turn effects the driver's safety. Part of this safety is determind by the driver's driving posture, mirror alignment and use of the seatbelt, headrestraint and airbags, but there are other elements

I guess it goes both ways LOL

Let me guess. You were not able to pass. When road conditions returned to no possibility of passing the asshole resumed their 25-30 speed. At least that is what they do to me. These idiots along with the tailgaters who will not

I paricularly remember a collision where a poor 18 year old biker (on a big scooter from a model I ca
